The House is up and running…

So far, the House has gotten a great response from the community.  We honestly weren’t sure what the outcome of this experiment would be, if people would steal all the books, or vandalize the House, or bring too many books and leave them in stacks around it….  Thankfully, none of these things has happened, and the House still stands, give or take a broken window or two (all repaired now).

The shelves have been about 50% full for the last few weeks — it would definitely be nice to get some more donations of both adult and kids’ books.  But the good news is, every time I check on the House there’s a whole new batch of books there.

Here are some pictures of opening day…

Books needed!

The House is running low!  If you are looking to clear some space from your shelves please bring some by and donate.  Kids books too.

A Successful Launch

After a torrential downpour on Saturday morning we opened the House in the afternoon and postponed our “official” opening to today, and it was perfect weather.  We got such a great response from park-goers — especially kids!  In fact, I think by the end of the day all the kids’ books were completely gone, so we’ll definitely need some donations of those.

Because a few people weren’t quite sure how the House works, here’s the deal:

By all means, take a book if you happen to be passing by and see something you like.  Take it home and keep it, just bring back another one (or two) to donate at some point.  Many people told us they have “tons” to give, which is fantastic but we only ask that you only donate what can fit inside the House, and not leave books lying outside it.  You can also just grab a book to read in the park and put it right back.

We love that kids are so drawn to the House, and it’s fine for them to explore and move books around, we just ask that parents try and keep them from slamming the doors or forcing them open too wide.  The idea is that kids books will be on the lower shelves and adult books at the top.

Thank you, Park Slope, for welcoming this project so warmly!   We hope everyone will be game to help us make it work, and keep it tidy and in one piece.

Launch this Saturday!

Come out this Saturday and witness the launch of the Hundred Story House!

We’ll be in JJ Byrne Park in Park Slope from 11Am until 4Pm, with a welcome table and a book donation depot.  We’ll also have a contest wherein we’ll present a list of fourteen opening lines from famous novels and the person who correctly identifies the most will win a gift certificate to Community Books.

If you can, bring a book or two that you love and that you’d be willing to donate.  If you can’t make it on Saturday come out and check out the House any time until October 26.

And check back here soon for news on House and how its residency in JJ Byrne park goes…
